The Space Between You & Me is a documentary exploring director Lily Ahree Siegel’s international adoption from Korea to Alabama, juxtaposed with experiences from Myungsoon, Lily’s birth mother, and Emily, another Korean-American adoptee.

Lily is a Korean-American adoptee, exploring the trauma of international adoption through her birth mother, Myungsoon, and another Korean American adoptee, Emily.

The reasons for adoption are often complex, sad, and bittersweet. Through sharing Korean culture, making kimchi, or getting a tattoo, Emily and Lily have different ways to reclaim their lost identity. But can they ever find belonging between these two worlds?

The documentary is available to view on PBS (US only).








Thematically, the poster uses forms of collaging originating from the different locations and life stages featured in the documentary: paper-cut collages, bojagi (a Korean traditional fabric patchwork technique), and layered wheatpaste posters.

Further conversations with Lily revealed the internet’s formative role in piecing together her identity growing up in Alabama in the 2000s, paralleling present day Skype calls connecting with her birth mother.
